Attention Autism – Stage 2

Last week I visited The Garden autism specialist school in Hackney to deliver the Attention Autism workshop to a group of teachers, teaching assistants and professionals from Hackney Portage Service: Hackney Learning Trust. What an absolute pleasure to work with this creative and thoughtful bunch of people!

This is a fun Stage 2 Christmas activity: ‘Snowman Splat’. Who doesn’t like building funny-looking snowmen and then distoying them? The aim of Stage 2 Attention Autism activities is to teach students with autism to sustain their attention on an adult led activity. Our goal is to provide students with opportunities that motivate them to share enthusiam with peers and communicate using vocalisations, gestures, facial expression or verbal language. The teacher also demonstrates organisational skills and imaginative use of objects and play. This Attention Autism Stage 2 activity can easily become a Stage 3 activity if we give students a turn to build their own snowmen and then destroy them. It can also be used as a Stage 2 – sensory story for the famous Raymond Briggs Christmas story ‘The Snowman‘. Enjoy!
